At MIT, undergraduate mechanical engineering students can enroll in a Toy Product Design course. The course provides students with an overview of design for entertainment and play. They experience the fundamental aspects of the product development process, including sketching, graphic design, prototyping, and gathering feedback from clients and kids in the community.
We worked with them on a project to design thermometers using the Stratasys J55 3D printer—the first physical item many of the students have ever printed. The thermometers are also fully functional, so students used them for their daily temperature checks. Here's a small selection of their incredible designs! We encourage you to explore the complete portfolio on the course website.
