FESTO Bionics – STEM Learning Kit

Bionics4Education promotes creativity and fun while learning from nature.

The FESTO Bionics learning kit contains the materials and components required for three different bionics projects: the Bionic Fish; the Bionic Chameleon Gripper; and the Bionic Elephant’s Trunk, an adaptive gripper with Fin Ray Effect®.

The basic equipment comprises servo motors, electronic components, and functional and connecting elements, so that the students can start building straight away.

Using this innovative modular system and the accompanying digital learning environment budding engineers learn to experiment with supplied components and simple work materials they select themselves (think cable fasteners, small sandbags, cardboard and foam or found materials!).  Students are given the opportunity to creatively problem-solve challenges as they work together as a team. The end result? Highly individual, reusable model variants that can easily be controlled via a PC or smartphone.

Bionics involves learning from nature and taking inspiration from nature’s vast pool of intelligent solutions. It’s also about asking the right questions and looking to the right models in our environment. How would nature deal with keeping warm or cool? How would nature waterproof? How would nature pick up objects? Studying how nature has developed solutions for living organisms can be very effective in terms of solving today’s engineering problems. Bionics serves as a link between biology and technology.

Since nature has the potential to provide inspiration for technology, we can look at bionics in two ways: a tool for increasing creativity or a tool for structured problem solving.

Interactive education concept for the engineers of tomorrow

Getting young people interested in technology is one of the main aims of the FESTO Bionic Learning Network. The interactive education concept allows a variety of topics relating to bionics to be experienced in the classroom. It consists of a digital learning environment and a practical training kit, which the pupils can use to make bionic prototypes in a creative manner

This free-of-charge learning environment can be found at www.bionics4education.com. It supports pupils by providing further content all about bionics, as well as helpful tips on practical implementation in lessons or at home. There are also training videos, software codes and CAD data for printing out components on a 3D printer, all provided for free. The platform is available in German and English.
